You too can be part of the fun of "Leonardo's Imagination" and also contribute to the success of this community event by volunteering in one of the following areas:
Kinetic Sculpture Race: October 6, 2002
1. Art Judges: Some of the criteria to consider: Have you ever seen anything like it before? Does it make you smile when you look at it? Is there an ingenious use of color and materials? Do you wish you had constructed this vehicle?
2. Engineering Judges: Some of the criteria to consider: Will the vehicle run? Will it hold together through the race? What is the ratio of duck tape to metal? Will NASA want to hire the designers of the vehicle to work in their engineering department when they are finished with the race?
3. Water Rescue: Volunteers for this portion of the KSR will be required to use both brains and brawn. You will be assisting with the entry and exiting of the sculptures from the water. Entering in most cases will be no problem, but exiting may be another matter. Remember your "'tug of war" days? Do not volunteer in this area if you have a bad back!
4. Sand Person: Volunteers in this area will have to make sure the sand area is free of large foreign obstacles (or small children) before the sculptures prepare to cross. You may also have to assist in vehicle relocation if anyone is stuck. As in water rescue - brains and brawn will come in handy.
5. Brake Testers: Volunteers in this area will administer the pre-race test to make sure vehicles are able to brake on hills before entering the roadway. If the vehicles are unable to stop before crashing into the volunteer they will not be able to participate in the race. (Only kidding!) Seriously - if one can't stop, one can't start.
6. Time Keepers: Volunteers in this area will monitor the time it takes for each kinetic sculpture to complete the race. You may jog along side the vehicles through the whole race if you need some exercise, or you may start your stop watch at the beginning, stretch out on a hammock near the finish line and record the time as the exhausted KSR'ers come rolling in.
7. Fashion Police: These volunteers will be responsible for evaluating the attire of the drivers and their pit crews. Depending on the nature of the bribes that day, and whether your tastes run to Chanel or the Gap, who knows who will make the "Best Dressed" list? Remember - beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Please notify us of your wish to volunteer and in what area. We will attempt to place people on a first come/first serve basis in their area of choice. Volunteers will be expected to be at Cedar Beach Park by 10 am for a pep talk and any necessary instructions. The key tasks for our volunteers are to be polite, cheerful, neatly dressed and willing to go with the flow that day. A KSR is an event for an adventurous crowd - flexibility, helpfulness and a sense of humor are mandatory!
